Stromboli Heaven

One of my favorite meals to make, no matter what the season, is Stromboli. I learned how to make it from my dad years ago and after the first time he showed me how I insisted on doing it myself, or at least insisted on helping.
Now I like to step outside of the box a little when it comes to the goodies inside {I was picky when I was younger and would normally stick to cheese, pepperoni and on days when I was feeling feisty, sausage} and, being one of the first things I made for him when we started dating, it’s one dish that Z always looks forward to.
Without further ado… Stromboli!
Here’s what you’ll need!

  • Pillsbury Pizza Crust
  • Mozzarella Cheese {or your cheese of choice}
  • Pepperoni
  • Onion
  • Red Pepper
  • Green Pepper
  • Any other fixins you’d like. I usually do sausage but I forgot about it this time. I blame the snow!

Chop and saute your veggies and prep any other ingredients (brown sausage, cut pepperoni, etc) then set them aside in a bowl to cool and resist the temptation to grab a spoon and start eating!

Roll out your pizza dough and start layering your ingredients. I always begin with pepperoni, followed by my veggies and other meats, then a nice layer of cheese.

YUM! I call this the SUPREME!

Now it’s time for a different kind of rolling. Start with the edge furthest away from you and roll the dough toward yourself. I’ve tried it out numerous ways and this is the most effective.

TA-DA… Stromboli complete! Sans cooking of course!

I’m sure there’s a better term for this, but squish and tuck the edges to prevent the yummy insides from falling out.

Place on non-stick sprayed aluminum foil {I usually slide the edge of the foil under the Stromboli and continue rolling it on. It’s easier than trying to pick it up and placing it down} and pop it in a 350 degree oven for about 40 minutes or until the dough is fully cooked and golden brown.

I was too excited to get it in my belly that I forgot to take a picture right out of the oven, but here are a few snapshots to get your mouth watering.

Serve with tomato sauce and you’ve got yourself a happy tummy! This is what was left over after Z, our friend Connor, and I attacked it.

Perfect… plenty to bring to work the next day!
Don’t forget that you can basically use whatever filling you want. I’ve done veggie, SUPER meat and more, and even considered doing a dessert stromboli with fruit and creme, kind of like a giant roll-up crepe! I’ll be sure to try that out soon and document the whole event like this one.
