15 Months… an update

It’s time for an update on The Bean… because it’s been a while. 3 months to be exact.

I’m not sure why 15 months seems like a significant age worth documenting, but maybe it’s just that 13 and 14 don’t sound all that “big”. 15 months allows me to split up Keelin’s 2nd year into 4 major updates which, to be totally honest, is a great break from the weekly updates that I dedicated myself to in her first year. Let’s get right to it because… well… she’s a growing girl, and this may take a while.

upcloseandpersonal

Vocabulary – aka the road to becoming a talk show host
At 12 months Keelin was sitting pretty with the basics; mama {sometimes} dada {all the time}, giggling, and random babble. Now at 15 we’re still prominent with ‘dada’ seeing as how it tends to be the default for everything that doesn’t have a name yet. It’s still adorable. I’m still jealous. There ya have it. She will say ‘mama’ from time to time, especially when she’s mad at me for not letting her have what she wants. Yes, we’ve entered into tantrum world… more on that later.

But by-far her favorite word would have to be ‘doggie’. I was unaware that ‘doggie’ has a wide variety of pronunciations, but my dear child has gone through just about all of them. Doooogie, dowgeeee, duggie {victory}, etc. Holy crap she loves those dogs and loves even more that she knows what to call them. Again, it’s adorable.

But that’s not the only animal-themed bit of vocab she has in her alphabet soup. She will ‘woof’ like the doggies which generally comes out as a forced ‘f’ sound and is accompanied by the cutest curly lipped pucker you’ve ever seen. Props to Biscuit the dog for assisting in that skill. She’s also mastered the ‘ish’ part of ‘fish’ and knows exactly where they are in the house. She’ll see a photo of a fish in a book, point to it, whisper ‘ish’ and look over at the aquarium. Genius I tell you. We are still working on ‘cat’ but from time to time when I’m being completely foolish recreating animal noises she will let out the sweetest ‘maaa’ in an attempt to meow. Yes, my heart breaks a little each time she does it.

She’s a big-time giggler and will mimic our laughs…which I’m currently trying to utilize to help teach her what monkeys say. She also loves saying ‘hi da’ whenever Z comes home from work or goes into her room after a nap. Add that to her love of singing, which she does just about any time we have music {with vocals} playing and she’s always chatting up a storm. But her most recent discovery is the word ‘bubble’. Z’s dad is a clown with the Big Apple Clown Care Unit that visits sick children in hospitals. A few days ago he came over after work and brought his back of tricks which included bubbles. She loved them, the dogs went ape-shiz, and by the end of the day she was giving us a muffled form of ‘baba’. Since then she’s decided that bubble can ONLY be said with the assistance of her finger so as soon as you ask her to say it she brings her hand to her mouth and strums her lips while she talks. What a cheater.

Let’s Get Physical
People are constantly telling me that Keelin looks exactly like her daddy. To which I generally respond, “Yes, if I didn’t push her out myself I would wonder if she was mine”. But now that she’s become this awesome little person I’m seeing more and more of myself {did I just call myself awesome?} in her actions. Especially the dancing. Watch out SYTYCD Season 29! Keelin loves to flap her arms, twist her torso, and rock her hips back and forth. We were watching SNL on Hulu the other day and she  was busting out some sweet moves to one of Justin Timberlake’s latest tunes. Of course this make’s me oober happy and allows me to daydream about her first dance recital and the perfectly pink tutu she’ll no-doubt spill chocolate milk on during rehearsal week. Le sigh. Here’s a little snippet of her dancing – pardon my shaky camera, I was trying to dance with her!

How else is she rocking her physical fitness? Climbing. Lots of climbing. The stairs have been a breeze for a while now so instead of crawling up them she’s insisting on WALKING up them. She hangs on to the railings and steps up each stair. She hasn’t quite captured the fact that her upper body SHOULD be in line with her feet as she’s going up, but that doesn’t stop her. She gets herself into a stunning diagonal {head hanging down over the lower steps of course, because this mama needs more things to give her a heart attack} and some how releases one of her hands to find the next rung up so she cal recover her balance and do it all again with the next step. Needless to say one of us is ALWAYS a step behind her and it takes a really long time to get upstairs.

She’s also gotten pretty great at butt-scooting down the stairs. She prefers to be holding one of our hands during the journey, which I’m totally fine with, but it also takes forever because our steps are slatted and she likes looking back through them to see who is downstairs.
And we officially have a couch-climber. Apparently her daddy taught her one day when I was out of the house. Of course. I’m surprised she hasn’t really tried to climb up anything else. Maybe subconsciously knows that the couch is nice and soft so it’s safer when she throws her face into the cushion.

But I have to say that one of my favorite new physical quirks is learning how to ‘pound it’. She’s been a high-fiver for a while now and just for fun we tried to get her to fist-bump. She wasn’t really into it at first until one day a few weeks ago when our neighbor came over to babysit while I kicked butt at a consignment sale. Keelin had woken up from her nap and was playing with her new toys when I gave ‘pound it’ one more shot. All of a sudden she formed her hand into a loose fist, made a broken wrist, and held it out for contact. What was even cuter was the way she lifted her shoulder to her ear to help lift her hand up. In case you were at all curious, yes, we make her do it all the time. And she loves it. Here’s proof.

Too Toothy
We are up to 12 teeth and counting. It’s a nice even spread with one molar on each side, top and bottom, and four spread across the front, top and bottom.

Mama’s Little Helper
One of Keelin’s new favorite past-times is to help Z or I empty the dishwasher.  What started out as her grabbing at the dishes and us telling her to put them down, turned into her picking the dishes up and handing them to us. Smart little stinker working around the ‘no’ command so she can keep touching the plates. She can obviously only reach the bottom rack so it’s minimal assistance, but it’s definitely a foreshadow of the future when she is big enough to help out more around the house and even help with future little siblings.

Defiance
For your sake and mine I’ll save this category for another post because, lets face it, toddlers aren’t the best with discipline starting out.

buddy fruit mishap

oh boy

Snuggle Bug
Keelin has gotten super snuggly lately. She’ll reach up like she wants to be held but when we pick her up she’ll grab hold of our necks and press her cheek against ours. If that’s not sweet enough she’ll pat the back of our heads with her tiny hands, as if to mimic us when we are comforting her. She loves pulling us in while she’s up on the changing table too.

Firsts
There have been plenty of firsts in the last 3 months, most of which I’ve already mentioned {climbing down steps, climbing up on the couch, etc.} but Keelin also had her first ride on a swing

swinging

and had her first haircut! I wish I could have waited a little longer but her poor little bangs were hanging down in her eyes. And since she’s really good at pulling every matter of hair accessory out of her hair, it was time. She did pretty well, didn’t really cry but squirmed all over the place. Z and I thought she looked like a little french girl afterwards so we lovingly call her Mon Petite every now and then.

first haircut

To keep you from a full day of reading I’ll cut it here. Those were the major updates from the last 3 months and I can’t wait to see what the next 3 have in store!
Happy 15 months mon petite! You are so loved.

Until next time…

Me In March

Happy Friday and happy March everyone!

I’ll keep this quick but I wanted to do something fun with you all this month, with the help of Twitter. I love getting to know you all through your blog stories and about me pages, but sometimes the most INTERESTING things about people are the special quirks that you learn over time. Since so many of us don’t get to spend time with each other outside of the blog-o-sphere, I thought it would be fun to share some of those fun and special quirks. Here’s what to do! Each day during the month of March, tweet out 1 special thing about yourself starting with “I am…” It can be anything about yourself, like…

I am… a sucker for photos of baby animals.
I am… incredibly impatient when it comes to waiting in line at Starbucks.
I am… a picky eater.

Share something fun and interesting about yourself, once a day for the entire month. Use the hashtag #MeInMarch and connect with me @serendipity17 so we can get to know each other! Then on Sunday March 31, share a post on your blog with a full list of ALL of your 31 quirks in a final Me In March collection.

No pressure. No link up. Just a fun and easy way to get to know your favorite bloggers a little better, and connect through Twitter!

Ready. Set. GO!

Until next time…

What a model…

Because it seems to be the pattern in my life, we were a bit late getting Keelin’s 1-year pictures taken. But finally, and almost a months AFTER her actual birthday, our schedules matched up enough with our FANTASTIC photographer to get them done.

You all are such sweet and supportive friends that I had to share some of my favorites with you. But I will warn you… this kid is a freaking model.

cheese and rice kid…

Do yourself a favor and check out Jamie Katz Photography. She’s amazing. You will love her. You will LOVE your photos!

Link UP Week: Recap and Thanks

link up weekWell, it’s the LAST day of link UP eek here at Life in these times…
I wanted to give a big thank you to all of you who are out there hosting link-up parties every week, especially the parties I joined this week. Please take some time to look through the week’s worth of posts and pay them a visit. They all have adorable blogs and pretty high participation within their parties so the likelihood that you’ll find one or TEN new blogs to follow is high!

I’m so happy with the way it turned out and hope that some of you found some great new link parties to participate in. I know I did!
I also apologize if my multiple posts per day got to be overkill. Thanks for sticking with me!

Instead of joining in on another link up today I thought I’d give some aid to anyone else who has been looking for new parties. While Google is great at helping find linky parties by day {Monday link ups, Tuesday link ups, etc} what I really could have used this week was a single database with ALL the link parties listed out by day and/or category. Yes I realize something like that would take a month to sift through only to find that 20 more link ups were added since the time I first started looking, but it would have been helpful none the less. While a number of bloggers do provide their own personal list of link ups, there are seriously like a billion out there that go somewhat unnoticed.  I thought I would do my best to compile a GIANT list of blogs and their link ups in case my fellow bloggers are in search of something new one day when inspiration fails to strike. I know there are plenty that I’ve left out and I’d really like to make this a reliable list so, let me know what link parties I should add by leaving a comment so I can add them to the list!

Link UP Week: Five Question Friday

link up week

First of all… I’M FEATURED!

The lovely Lanaya at Raising Reagan {I linked up with her and Violet Imperfection on Monday} featured me on her blog today! I’ll also be co-hosting Sunday’s Raising Imperfection link up so be sure you check it out! Onto today’s parties!

The first is one a link up I’ve participated in a few times before… but it’s been a while and I figured this week would be a good time to get back in the saddle.  It’s time for a little Five Question Friday, compliments of My Little Life. Nothing better than a little “getting to know you” info to kick your weekend off, right?

Five Question Friday button

1. What is a hobby you would love to learn and why?
Oh goodness, there are so many. I would really love to learn how to crochet. I’m getting the hang of knitting and figured I may as well learn how to do both! I’m also really interested in paper bead making. I found a few pins on pinterest all about paper beads and they are just so unique and beautiful. Outside of the sit-down-and-craft type ‘hobbies’ I’d also love to learn how to play the guitar and it would be aces if I could snap my fingers and be a super handy {wo}man. You know, a jigsaw wielding, electric drill toting, socket wrench twirling bad ass.

2. What do you wish you could have delivered to your house but does not deliver?
Ice Cream. Specifically cold stone or Brusters.

3. What’s your favorite snow day activity? Inside and out?
It’s been a while since I had a snow day but I always loved making hot chocolate and sitting by the fire as an inside activity. I remember one year my mom helped us make rice crispy treats while we waited for our snow gear to dry off. It was perfect because we let them set while we went out for round 2 of playing and had a nice treat waiting for us when we got back inside. Everything is fun outside in the snow, sledding, snowball fights  {wars}, making snowmen, etc. I could use a good heavy snow fall right about now!

4. Would you meet a stranger from an Internet dating site?
Since I don’t have need for a dating site.. no. And probably no even if I weren’t married. Those things creep me out a little bit

5. If you had to spend 35 hours in a car with 4 other people, who would you choose?
On any given day I’d choose my hubby for sure, but I thought I might switch it up for fun. This may sound terrible but I’m pretty positive I wouldn’t want to spend 35 hours in a car with Keelin. She gets cranky driving to and from church sometimes so 35 hours would probably push my limits. I’d have to say my 4 best gal pals {and roomies} from college. I miss them all terribly and I think a 35 hour road trip is plenty of time to catch up and remember old times!

YOUR TURN! Join the link up and answer today’s 5 questions! And be sure you hop around to others who have joined the party to see what kind of answers they gave!

Until next time…

Link UP Week: Delightfully Inspiring Thursday

link up week

The 2nd of today’s link up comes from a blog that I recently {and happily} stumbled upon called Delightful Order.

It’s a pretty basic link up, with tons of ‘delightfully inspiring’ shared projects. The host, DaNita focuses on four key lifestyle tips: Simplify, Create, Organize, Decorate. Sounds great to me! Be sure you pay her a visit and join in the link party by sharing anything related to decorating, crafting, party planning, gift ideas, organizing, or recipes!

This is a quick little project I did a while back when we moved our office out of our bedroom and into the corner of our living room. I have very little space for all of my craft and Etsy materials so I needed to improvise and create storage where there wasn’t any. I had just purchased a number of spools of ribbon and wanted an easy way to access them that wouldn’t leave me with a big box of tangled tentacles. I decided to make a hanging ‘spool spinner’ on the inside of my cabinet door.

What you’ll need:

  • ribbon {duh}
  • small dowel rods {or something sturdy that will fit through the center hole of your spool}
  • twine or rope {ribbon will also work but I didn’t want to have a ribbon overload}
  • craft glue
  • adhesive-backed hooks

What I did:

I first decided how low I wanted the ribbon to hang by measuring out my twine – which will be the main support for the spinner. I then doubled it over and made a loop knot so that I could secure it onto the end of the dowel rod. Then tightened and secured with craft glue.

DSC_0003

Once the glue dried I slid the ribbon onto the dowel, allowing the twine knot to act as a stopper. * I found it easier to make sure the ribbon is all facing the same direction, and hanging down from the front of the spool so it’s easy to pull down and measure out.

DSC_0004

I did end up having to shorten the dowel which was pretty easy. Just be sure {if you need to do the same} you sand off the ends so it’s smooth.
With the free end of the twine I made a simple bow on the opposite end of the dowel, closing in the ribbon. Be sure it’s tight but don’t secure this side with glue so it can be removed to change out ribbon in the future.

DSC_0008

Your twine should make a triangle above the ribbon, from which you can easily hang wherever you need. I used adhesive-backed hooks on the interior of my cabinet doors.

Hang and you’re done!

TA-DA. Simple and sweet. Just the way I like it!

Link UP Week: Penny Pinching Party

link up week

Last link up of the day everyone, this one is about saving a little cash and it comes to you from The Thrifty Home. She has so many great ideas {as do her fellow party attendees} on great ways to save cash without limiting yourself. Do yourself a favor and check out her blog if you haven’t already. More specifically, check out the links that have been shared in her weekly Penny Pinching Party.

You may not know that I am currently reading the fantastic and terribly intimidating book, America’s Cheapest Family Gets You Right On The Monday. Basically this rock star family of 7 has found a way to live off of $350/month in groceries. Yes, I’m flabbergasted. And nowhere near their success I might add. BUT, the few chapters I have read have definitely sparked the desire to find ways to be thrifty, one of which I’m super excited about and thought was worth sharing.

Backstory: when Z first went on the 17-day diet I started looking for new ways to get creative in the kitchen without breaking his dietary restrictions. One of our fall-back dinner choices was turkey patties but I didn’t want them to be the same boring patty each time so I started experimenting with ingredients. Adding this, substituting that, you know the drill. It was then that I fell in love with sun-dried tomatoes. I put these little bites of heaven on EVERYTHING now! Homemade pizza, in meatloaf, in my spaghetti sauce, you name it. The funny thing is, I’ve never really been a tomato fan but these are like culinary crack! They are delish and I would eat them with every meal if I could. I would also be eating out of our car because I would have spent all our life’s savings on buying the darn things! Holy mother are they pricey. The good kind at least. So I decided I had to find a way to keep my tastebuds happy without going over the grocery budget. ENTER PINTEREST AND YOUR GLORIOUS GLORY!

I stumbled upon a pin from Better Hens and Gardens for HOMEMADE sun-dried {oven-dried} tomatoes. Hallelujah.

Just grab some cherry tomatoes – cheap-o at any grocery store.

DSC_0075

Slice them in half and lay them face up on a baking sheet.

DSC_0077

Put them in a 200 degree oven for 6-12 hours. YES, 6-12 hours.
This is how easy this all is… slice em’ and forget em’. The time it takes will depend on how large your tomatoes are. Mine were on the small side so it only took them around 6-7 hours. Leave them alone as long as you can and check on them at around 6 hours to see how they are doing.

Once they are done you can easily pop them in a zip lock back and straight into the freezer… Me on the other hand, I wanted to add some extra good ju ju so I separated the tomatoes into smaller freezer cups. {I used to use these for Keelin’s homemade baby food, great buys at the dollar store}

DSC_0081

Then I added a mixture of olive oil and my favorite spices – garlic, salt, pepper, paprika, oregano. THEN I popped them in the freezer.

DSC_0083

You can do these in big batches and store them away in individual portions to use whenever you need them. For most recipes you don’t even need to defrost them, just toss dump them into the saute’ pan with the rest of the veggies and prepare for a party on your tastebuds. Plus, it’s far cheaper than spending $4.00 on a single jar of the good stuff at the grocery store!

Join Jen and share your own Penny Pinching tips!

Until next time…

Link UP Week: Wow Me Wednesday

link up weekAnother Wednesday link up!
Am I going overboard? Do I care? NO… I’m having too much fun!

This next link up is called Wow Me Wednesday and is coming to you from Ginger Snap Crafts. Here are the rules:

The “rules” are simple.
Please consider sharing this party on facebook, twitter, google+ or pinterest.
Link up to your post, not your main blog.
Must be something made by YOU!
Visit other links, make new friends & most of all have fun!
Check back every Thursday for features from the previous week’s party.
I shared a sneak peek of this project on instagram a while ago and am excited to share it with you now! I’d been wanting to make Keelin a set of alphabet magnets to play with on the frig while I’m cooking. With the help of my weekly JoAnn fabric coupons, I snagged a bag of wooden letters for super cheap! At first I considered painting them but then thought about her habits at this age {i.e. putting everything in her mouth} and decided I wanted to add color while still being safe IN CASE one of the letters happened to find itself between toddler teeth. My answer… food coloring!
After searching high and low for a reasonably priced set of primary colored food coloring {Seriously what’s with all the pastels and neons. What happened to plain old red, yellow, and blue?} I finally grabbed a jumbo pack of Wilton gel colors and got down to business.
Here’s what you’ll need:
  • wooden alphabet letters {or shapes, whatever you are dying}
  • food coloring {I used gel but from what I’ve researched liquid should yield the same results}
  • white wine vinegar
  • boiling water
  • dying bowls/cups {I used solo cups so I wouldn’t risk dying my dishes}
  • disposable gloves {your hands WILL turn all sorts of fun colors if you don’t}
  • toothpick/fork/wooden skewer for mixing
  • adhesive magnets
  • paper towels
  • wax paper/parchment paper
Here’s what to do:

I kept it simple with a repeating rainbow pattern by laying out the alphabet in front of their designated color like so:
DSC_0079
To prep the wood you’ll want to sand all sides – this will allow the color to adhere better.
DSC_0089
As far as mixing the color, I disolved the gel color in boiling water and about a tablespoon of distilled white vinegar – which also helps the color bond to the wood.
*Note – be sure you test each color and whether or not the vinegar has an effect on it BEFORE you drop your letters. I learned that the vinegar turned my red a little too orange and my purple a little too blue. If you notice this happen, simply drop your sanded letters into a water/vinegar bath for a few seconds before dropping in the color. If you want to avoid the possibility of altering your colors all together you can keep the vinegar mix separate for all of your letters. Up to you!
Once your water is the desired color {I also recommend testing some small pieces of wood in each color to see if it’s the shade you want. My pack of letters had a few extras of the vowels so I broke them up and tested them all before dropping the whole letter.} drop your letter and use a fork, skewer, toothpick, etc. to make sure it’s fully coated. Don’t let the letter sit for too long or it may get waterlogged. About 30 seconds for each should be fine.
DSC_0088
Remove the letter and place on a paper towel, on top of wax paper {to keep the color from bleeding onto your table or countertop}
Do this with all of your letters and let dry.
If you find that some of the color isn’t as bold as you’d like it, drop the letters again until you get the color you want!
DSC_0092
I probably could have dropped some of them a few more times but I like the way they all turned out.
Once the letters are completely dry, attach adhesive magnets to the backs of each. I’d try one magnet toward the center of the letter, test it out on the frig to see where it could use more support and add as needed.
DSC_0096
Please ignore my orange fingernail in the photo above. Proof that some kind of hand protection is wise.
DSC_0097
Last but not least, tack them on the frig and watch your toddler swat them immediately on the floor. Hard work pays off, eh?
DSC_0102
Don’t mind my filthy, dented frig.
SO, there you have it. A fun, inexpensive, and easy way to make toddler-safe alphabet magnets. {Obviously don’t let your kid play with them unsupervised because they are still made of wood and magnets which don’t BELONG in slobbery soggy mouths. Just know that if you happen to catch a quick chomp, you don’t need to worry about the hazards of ingesting paint.
Thanks to Ginger for hosting such a fun link up. Please join the party by adding one of your recent projects to the list!
Until next time…

Link UP Week: What I’m Loving Wednesday

link up weekHello again and welcome to another day of link UP week!
I thought I’d kick things off today with a whole lot of love by joining This Kind of Love for a little What I’m Loving Wednesday. It’s a pretty basic premise… share all the things you’re currently loving! I have a lot… so I’d better get started.

I’m loving this dress from the Prabal Gurung line at Target.

I’m loving that it’s Girl Scout cookie season yet again… and that I’ve now seen TWO girl scouts wearing giant cookie costumes to promote. I will be stocking up – they freeze so well!

I’m loving these boots…

… and these comfy cozy Toms.

I’m loving the idea of tiny tattoos. I’m not a fan of hearts but the itty bittyness of these ankle tats are adorable. Possibility for tattoo #2?

I’m loving that the hubs sent me photos of himself with the stars of NBC’s Revolution yesterday… because they were hanging out on set all day. No biggie.

I’m loving white lace dresses. I’m determined to get one this summer. I blame the show Nashville for fueling my obsession.

I’m loving this quote:

I don’t want my children to be what I want them to be. I want them to become everything God created them to be.” – John Gordon

I’m loving this awesome towel holder made from a wine rack. Genius.

I’m loving how playing single mom this week has made me appreciate my husband that much more.

I’m loving that you can search “hey girl” on pinterest and get an endless supply of this beautiful brilliance.

I’m loving TOO many piece on ModCloth to list them all… but this, this, this, this, and this are a few favorites.

I’m loving that so many of my friends are preggo. Babies and moms rule.

I’m loving that pony tails are now possible.

I’m loving all the new blogs and friends I’ve been introduced to during this link UP week. And it’s only Wednesday!

Join in with Jamie and share some of the things you are loving today!

Until next time…
